A role is a bundle of permissions plus a color and a name. A member can have several roles; the grants add up, then channel overrides refine them.
Where to edit
Community Settings → Roles & Permissions. You need Manage Roles. You cannot move roles above your own highest role — that is the hierarchy.
Typical permissions:
- view channels, send messages, attach files, mention roles;
- connect to voice, speak, enable camera, share screen;
- kick, ban, time out, manage messages;
- manage channels, roles, emoji, webhooks, view the activity log.
@everyone is the default for every member. Extra exceptions for roles or people live in Channel Settings → Permissions.
Color and display
A role can appear separately in the member list and color nicknames. Do not hand out Administrator lightly: that flag bypasses the other checkboxes.
Moderation: Moderation and the activity log.
