Community channels

Text, voice, stage, and link channels, categories, and NSFW

1 min readUpdated for the current Astral app

Channels are rooms inside a community. Anyone with Manage Channels can create one: right-click the list → Create Channel. The name can be up to 100 characters. A category is a separate Create Category modal, not a channel type.

Types

Type For
Text Channel Messages, images, GIFs, emoji
Voice Channel Voice, camera, screen share
Stage Channel An event: members join as listeners until they are added as speakers
Link Channel A shortcut to an external URL (up to 1024 characters)

Categories group channels in the list. Drag channels to tidy the order (permission required).

Channel settings

Right-click → Channel Settings:

  • overview: name, topic, NSFW;
  • permissions: extra rules for roles and members;
  • invites for this channel only;
  • webhooks.

Slowmode and voice options

In Channel Settings → General, text channels have Slowmode (5 seconds to 6 hours) and a topic up to 1024 characters. Mark as 18+ (NSFW) is available on text channels only.

Voice and stage: bitrate 8 / 64 / 96 / 128 kbps, participant limit 0–99 (0 = unlimited), region Automatic or manual, and a stage / broadcast toggle.

NSFW / 18+

Mark a text channel as age-restricted in Overview. Minors cannot open it; adults confirm before they enter. Unlabeled NSFW in regular channels or avatars breaks the Guidelines. More: Age gates and NSFW channels.

Voice and stage: Voice, video, and screen share.
