Direct messages and group chats

How to open a DM, create a group of up to 10 people, and manage it

1 min readUpdated for the current Astral app

Direct messages live in Home (the icon at the top of the community rail).

One-to-one DM

  • Open a profile → Message.
  • Or press Ctrl / Cmd + K and start typing a name.
  • Or click a friend in the friends list.

Who can message you first is set in the Privacy Dashboard. Community members can DM you only if you allow it. See Blocking and privacy settings.

There is also a personal notes channel (notes to yourself). It is not a conversation with another person.

Group chat

A group can have up to 10 people: you plus 9 friends.

  1. Press Ctrl / Cmd + Shift + T or use New Group in the DM list.
  2. Pick friends and create the chat.
  3. If a group with the same members already exists, Astral offers to open it instead of making a duplicate.

The owner can rename the group, change the icon, invite people (while seats remain), and transfer ownership. Anyone can leave. Who may add you to groups is also in the Privacy Dashboard.

You can start a call in a DM or a group: Voice, video, and screen share.
